Zinc Borate MonoHydrate

Taixing is a professional flame retardant manufacturer. Leveraging our professional R&D and production capabilities, we offer zinc borate monohydrate (2ZnO·3B₂O₃·3.5H₂O CAS NO.1332-07-6 / 138265-88-0). Produced using the boric acid method, it boasts high purity, high ZnO and B₂O₃ content, and high thermal stability.

Zinc borate monohydrate, compared to the anhydrous version we can produce, contains a crystalline water that is released first when heated. This water absorbs heat and dilutes flammable gases, making it more effective at retardant and smoke-suppressing than the anhydrous version. It is an environmentally friendly flame retardant that complies with national standards such as GB/T 23669-2022, as well as EU RoHS and REACH environmental certifications.

How to Choose the Right Zinc Borate: Anhydrous or Monohydrate?

For selection questions, please feel free to contact Taixing. Here, we've briefly outlined the key considerations:

The most crucial consideration: thermal stability. As mentioned earlier, monohydrate zinc borate contains water of crystallization, which is released upon heating. Simply put, its temperature resistance is not as high as anhydrous zinc borate, starting to lose water at 290–320°C, while anhydrous zinc borate is stable up to >400°C. Please choose based on your polymer.

In actual flame retardant processes, monohydrate flame retardants absorb heat and dilute gases upon water release, while anhydrous zinc borate forms a stronger char layer, suppresses smoke, and has higher heat resistance.

We also need to consider the processing. Adding more monohydrate zinc borate increases hygroscopicity, but dispersion is easier. Anhydrous zinc borate primarily results in more stable particles and higher dimensional stability after processing.

Product Applications

Engineering plastics industry: Maintain stability at processing temperatures above 300 ℃ while preserving the strength and aging resistance of the material.

Special rubber industry: does not affect the vulcanization efficiency and elasticity of rubber, while improving the high and low temperature resistance and aging resistance of rubber.

Coatings industry: Improve the high temperature resistance and adhesion of coatings, prevent yellowing and cracking of the layer after drying, and extend the service life of the substrate.

Building materials industry: as an additive added to enhance the fire resistance level of building materials.

Textile industry: used for flame retardant finishing of polyester and cotton blended fabrics.
