Ⅰ. The core value of PPA and the hidden threat of sulfate impurities

Polyphthalamide (PPA, high-temperature nylon) is a semi aromatic high-performance engineering plastic that has become a core material in the fields of new energy vehicles, 5G communications, industrial electronics, aerospace, etc. due to its long-term heat resistance from 150-220 ℃, low water absorption, high dimensional stability, excellent electrical insulation and chemical resistance. Under the strict requirements of "zero failure, long life, and high electrical safety" for materials in high-end manufacturing worldwide, material purity (especially sulfate impurity content) has become a key variable determining the long-term reliability and electrical performance of PPA.

High sulfate residue PPA can cause chain problems such as molecular chain degradation, ion migration, insulation failure, metal corrosion, and irreversible performance degradation under high temperature, high humidity, high pressure, and electrochemical coupling conditions; And high-purity PPA with low sulfate content (≤ 50ppm, even ≤ 10ppm) can suppress the above risks from the root and achieve a stable life cycle of 15-25 years. This article systematically analyzes the core impact of low sulfate on PPA from four dimensions: mechanism, performance, application, and standards, providing professional basis for global market selection and promotion.

Ⅱ. The sources of sulfate impurities in PPA

1. Raw material side: residual sulfate and sulfite ions in the neutralization and refining processes during the synthesis of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and diamine monomers;

2. Processing end: Sulfate impurities introduced by catalysts, antioxidants, flame retardants, and glass fiber/mineral fillers during polymerization, modification, and granulation;

3. Recycling/Regeneration End: Sulfate pollutants introduced during the cleaning and granulation process of recycled materials.

Ⅲ. The positive impact of low sulfate content on the long-term reliability of PPA

(1) Thermal aging stability: Performance retention rate increased by 40% after 10000 hours+

-High sulfur PPA (≥ 500ppm): After 1000 hours of thermal aging at 180 ℃, the retention rate of tensile strength is ≤ 60%, the retention rate of bending modulus is ≤ 55%, and obvious brittleness and pulverization occur;

-Low sulfur PPA (≤ 50ppm): Heat aged at 180 ℃ for 10000 hours, with a tensile strength retention rate of ≥ 90% and a bending modulus retention rate of ≥ 88%, without significant performance degradation, meeting the 25 year lifespan requirements for automobiles and aviation.

(2) Damp heat aging stability: inhibits hydrolysis and extends service life

-High sulfur PPA: After 500 hours of wet heat aging at 85 ℃/85% RH, the water absorption rate is ≥ 1.2%, the strength retention rate is ≤ 50%, and cracking and delamination occur;

-Low sulfur PPA: 85 ℃/85% RH wet and hot aging for 3000 hours, water absorption rate ≤ 0.5%, strength retention rate ≥ 85%, size change rate ≤ 0.05%, suitable for harsh wet and hot scenarios such as new energy vehicle battery packs and on-board chargers (OBC).

(3) Anti creep and anti fatigue: zero drift performance under long-term load

Low sulfur PPA molecular chain has high integrity and no impurity defects. Under long-term load of 150 ℃ and 10MPa, the creep modulus retention rate is ≥ 90%, and the fatigue resistance is increased by more than 3 times, avoiding functional failure of engine compartment sensors, gears, and structural components caused by creep deformation.

(4) Chemical and medium resistance: inhibits ion precipitation and extends component life

Low sulfur PPA has an ion precipitation amount of ≤ 1ppm in ethylene glycol coolant, engine oil, fuel, and hydraulic oil, with no medium pollution or component corrosion caused by sulfate migration. It is suitable for chemical resistant scenarios such as fuel cells, electric drive systems, and hydraulic components.

Ⅳ. The decisive effect of low sulfate content on the electrical performance of PPA

(1) Insulation resistance (IR): increased by 10 ³ -10 ⁵ times, eliminating the risk of leakage

-High sulfur PPA: volume resistivity ≤ 10 ΩΩ· cm, surface IR ≤ 10 ΩΩ· cm, prone to leakage under high voltage;

-Low sulfur PPA: Volume resistivity ≥ 10 ¹⁶Ω· cm, surface IR ≥ 10 ¹⁵Ω· cm, meets UL and IEC high-voltage insulation standards, suitable for high-voltage connectors, battery modules, and charging pile components.

(2) Dielectric performance (Dk/Df): Stable and low loss, ensuring 5G/high-speed signal transmission

-High sulfur PPA: Dk ≥ 4.0, Df ≥ 0.015, signal attenuation ≥ 30% at 1MHz, unable to meet the requirements of 5G millimeter wave and high-speed data transmission;

-Low sulfur PPA: Dk remains stable at 3.2-3.4 at 1MHz, Df≤0.005, Signal attenuation ≤ 5%, compatible with antenna bracket, high-speed connector, RF module.

(3) Anti electric trace and anti arc (CTI/PTI): Increases 200V+and reduces fire risk

-High sulfur PPA: TTI ≤ 400V, PTI ≤ 350V, prone to electric traces and arc breakdown;

-Low sulfur PPA: TTI ≥ 600V, PTI ≥ 550V, certified UL94 V-0 flame retardant, suitable for industrial control, high-voltage switchgear, and new energy vehicle electric drive systems.

(4) Ion migration inhibition: zero metal corrosion, ensuring stable electrical connections

Low sulfur PPA has a copper ion migration rate of ≤ 10 ⁻⁹ cm/s at 85 ℃/85% RH and 500V DC bias, without metal corrosion or increased contact resistance. It is suitable for electrical connection components such as copper bars, busbars, and precision pins.

Ⅴ. The Global Application Value of Low Sulfur PPA

Core application scenarios

1. New energy vehicles: high-voltage connectors, battery pack housings OBC、 Electric drive sensors, fuel cell components (requiring low sulfur ≤ 50ppm and a lifespan ≥ 15 years);

2. 5G/Communication: Millimeter wave antenna bracket, high-speed connector, RF module, server components (requiring low sulfur ≤ 10ppm, Df ≤ 0.005);

3. Industrial electronics: frequency converters, servo motors, sensors, circuit breakers (requiring low sulfur ≤ 30ppm, CTI ≥ 600V);

4. Aerospace: onboard electronics, engine components, satellite structural components (requiring low sulfur ≤ 10ppm, performance retention rate ≥ 90% after 10000 hours of thermal aging).

Ⅵ. Quality standards for low sulfur PPA

Sulfate content control standard

-Industrial grade: Sulfate ≤ 50ppm;

-Electronic/automotive grade: Sulfate ≤ 30ppm;

-Aviation/5G grade: Sulfate ≤ 10ppm.

VII.  Conclusion

Under the rigid demand for "high reliability, long life, and high electrical safety" in high-end manufacturing worldwide, low sulfate content has become the core threshold for PPA to upgrade from "general engineering plastics" to "high-performance specialty materials". Low sulfur PPA achieves long-term reliability improvement of 2-3 times and electrical performance optimization of 10 ³ -10 ⁵ times by inhibiting thermal oxidative degradation, hydrolytic aging, ion migration, and metal corrosion, perfectly adapting to global high growth tracks such as new energy vehicles, 5G communications, industrial electronics, and aerospace.
