How to Improve The Temperature Resistance Of Halogen-Free Flame Retardant PP?

2026-06-17 0 Leave me a message

Ⅰ. Preface: Temperature resistance bottleneck of halogen-free flame retardant PP and global market demand

Halogen free flame retardant polypropylene (PP) has become a core environmentally friendly material in the fields of automobiles, new energy, electronics and electrical, rail transit, cable sheaths, etc., thanks to its advantages of environmental protection, low smoke and low toxicity, easy processing, and controllable cost. Against the backdrop of global carbon neutrality and safety regulatory upgrades, flame retardant standards such as UL94 V-0, VW-1, and IEC 60332 have become the basis for entry, while the four temperature resistance indicators of long-term use temperature, heat deformation temperature, Vicat softening point, and high-temperature aging stability are becoming the key thresholds determining whether materials can enter the high-end supply chain.

Traditional halogen-free flame retardant PP generally suffers from insufficient heat resistance: the heat distortion temperature (HDT) is mostly between 80-100 ℃, and the long-term use temperature is only 60-85 ℃. At high temperatures, it is prone to creep, warping, strength reduction, flame retardant migration, and powdering, making it difficult to meet long-term service scenarios such as engine compartments, power batteries, charging piles, photovoltaic connectors, and industrial connectors at 100-150 ℃. This article systematically explains the original technical path for improving the temperature resistance of halogen-free flame retardant PP from six dimensions: substrate selection, flame retardant system reconstruction, heat resistance modification, processing technology, formula synergy, and evaluation system, providing global customers with practical high-performance material solutions.

Halogen free flame retardant polypropylene

Ⅱ. The core reason for insufficient temperature resistance of halogen-free flame retardant PP

1. PP has weak intrinsic heat resistance: PP molecular chains are flexible aliphatic structures with low glass transition temperature, no rigid side groups, and are prone to segment movement when heated, resulting in a decrease in size and mechanical stability.

2. Halogen free flame retardants damage heat resistance: Common nitrogen phosphorus, hydroxide, and expansion flame retardants (IFR) are mostly polar fillers, which have poor compatibility with non-polar PP and are prone to defects and stress concentration, accelerating thermal aging; Some flame retardants have low thermal decomposition temperatures and decompose prematurely at high temperatures, causing thermal oxidative aging, discoloration, and mechanical collapse.

Ⅲ. Six core technological paths for improving the temperature resistance of halogen-free flame retardant PP

(1) Substrate oriented selection: Building a heat-resistant skeleton from the source

The first step in improving temperature resistance is to select a high heat-resistant PP matrix and reject generic materials

-High crystalline homopolymer PP: crystallinity ≥ 65%, melting point of crystal zone 163-168 ℃, significantly better heat resistance and rigidity than copolymer PP, suitable for high rigidity and high heat resistance structural components.

-High melt strength PP (HMS-PP): The long branched chain structure enhances melt strength and high-temperature sag resistance, making it suitable for extrusion, thermoforming, and large injection molded parts.

-High modulus/high heat resistance grade PP: Control the melt flow rate (MFR 3-10 g/10min), balance processability and heat resistance, and avoid heat collapse caused by low molecular weight components.

-Alloying enhances temperature resistance: PP is combined with high-temperature engineering plastics such as PET, PBT, PA, etc. to achieve temperature resistance breakthrough through "compatibility expansion+reaction grafting". The long-term use temperature can reach over 120 ℃.

(2) Reconstruction of halogen-free flame retardant system: no conflict between heat resistance and flame retardancy synergy

Traditional flame retardants often sacrifice heat resistance, while high heat resistant halogen-free flame retardant systems are designed based on the principles of "high decomposition temperature, low migration, strong carbonization, and interface compatibility":

1. High heat-resistant phosphorus nitrogen synergistic system

Choose flame retardants such as piperazine polyphosphate, melamine polyphosphate (MPP), and piperazine pyrophosphate with a decomposition temperature of ≥ 320 ℃, match the PP processing window, and avoid high-temperature decomposition; Through the synergistic effect of phosphorus nitrogen, a dual effect of condensed phase carbonization and gas-phase free radical capture can be achieved, with UL94 V-0 achieved with low addition and minimal impact on heat resistance.

2. Nano inorganic flame retardant synergistic effect

Nano brucite, modified magnesium hydroxide, layered double hydroxide (LDH), organic montmorillonite (OMMT): The layered structure forms a physical barrier, delaying heat transfer and oxygen permeation, increasing the thermal decomposition temperature (TGA 5% weight loss increases by 20-40 ℃), while reducing the amount of hydroxide added, reducing mechanical and thermal losses.

3. Silicon based heat-resistant and flame-retardant synergy

Silicone powder, silicone rubber, nitrogen silicon flame retardant, and PP molecules are linked together to form a dense ceramic carbon layer at high temperatures, which provides thermal insulation, oxygen isolation, droplet suppression, and enhances thermal oxygen stability and long-term heat aging resistance.

4. Charcoal formation promotion and migration prevention

Compound microencapsulated red phosphorus, zinc borate, and charcoal forming agent to strengthen the dense continuous carbon layer; By adopting surface grafting, in-situ polymerization, and dual masterbatch dispersion techniques, the problems of precipitation, migration, and frosting are solved, ensuring long-term reliability at high temperatures.

(3) Precision compounding of heat-resistant modifiers: pulling up the temperature resistance

Through the integration of heat-resistant agents, antioxidants, nucleating agents, and crosslinking agents, heat-resistant transitions are achieved:

1. Efficient thermal oxygen stabilization system

The ternary compound of hindered phenol, hypophosphite, and thioester captures peroxide free radicals, decomposes hydrogen peroxide, inhibits thermal oxidative aging, and increases the lifespan of 135 ℃ thermal aging by 3-5 times.

2. Efficient nucleating agent

Sorbitol, phosphate, and nano nucleating agents refine grains, improve crystallinity and completeness, increase Vicat softening point by 10-25 ℃, increase hot deformation temperature by 8-18 ℃, and significantly improve dimensional stability.

3. Micro crosslinking/reversible crosslinking technology

Silane grafting hydrolysis crosslinking, peroxide micro crosslinking, reversible covalent crosslinking, restrict chain segment movement, HDT breakthrough 125 ℃, long-term use temperature above 110 ℃, balancing toughness and processability.

4. Heat resistant reinforcement filling

Fiberglass, mineral fiber, crystal whiskers, and talc powder are surface coupled and modified to form a rigid network, with an HDT of 130-150 ℃, suitable for high heat resistant structural components.

(4) Interface compatibility and dispersion: making heat resistance "stable"

Poor temperature resistance, 70% due to interface and dispersion issues:

-In situ reaction compatibility: maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP-g-MAH) and acrylic ester grafted PP achieve chemical bonding between polar flame retardants and non-polar PP, resulting in a several fold increase in interfacial strength.

-Double stage masterbatch dispersion: Prepare high concentration heat-resistant and flame-retardant masterbatch first, and then dilute it twice to avoid powder agglomeration and ensure no separation or precipitation at high temperatures.

(5) Optimization of processing technology: locking in performance

The same formula and process determine the final heat resistance:

-Temperature gradient control: segmented temperature control of 170-205 ℃ to avoid overheating degradation.

-High shear and strong dispersion: Combining twin-screw kneading blocks and optimizing screw speed to achieve uniform dispersion.

(6) Formula synergy balance: without sacrificing toughness, processing, and cost

High end halogen-free flame retardant PP must have a five dimensional balance: flame retardant ≥ UL94 V-0 | heat-resistant HDT ≥ 110 ℃ | toughness retention rate ≥ 70% | smooth processing | controllable cost.

By synergistically reducing filling, enhancing interfaces, and increasing nano efficiency, we can achieve:

-Reduce the amount of flame retardant added by 30% -50%

-Heat resistance increased by 20-40 ℃

-No significant loss in tensile/impact strength

-High temperature long-term aging without powdering, migration, or brittleness

Ⅳ. Improved key performance indicators (original measured reference)

Taking the typical formula of high temperature resistant halogen-free flame retardant PP as an example:

-Flame retardant rating: UL94 V-0 (1.5-3.0mm)

-Hot deformation temperature HDT (0.45MPa): 115-135 ℃

-Vicat softening point VST: 125-145 ℃

-Long term use temperature: 105-125 ℃

-Thermogravimetric analysis at 5% temperature: ≥ 285 ℃

-135 ℃ thermal aging for 1000 hours: tensile retention rate ≥ 75%, no powdering or precipitation

-Water absorption rate: ≤ 0.03%, excellent moisture and heat resistance stability

Ⅴ.  High end application scenarios

1. New energy vehicles: structural components of power battery pack, busbar, wire harness terminals, charging pile shell, engine compartment components

2. Electronic and electrical: connectors, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, switches, photovoltaic junction boxes

3. Rail transit/cables: low smoke halogen-free cable sheath, insulation layer, interior decoration parts of the carriage

4. Industry and Home Appliances: Motor Components, Electric Heating Appliance Enclosures, High Temperature Ventilation Components

Ⅵ.  Summary: The core logic of improving the temperature resistance of halogen-free flame-retardant PP

The improvement of temperature resistance of halogen-free flame retardant PP is not achieved through the combination of a single additive, but rather through a comprehensive system engineering of substrate flame retardant heat resistance interface process evaluation. The core lies in: high heat-resistant matrix+high decomposition temperature flame retardant synergistic effect+efficient thermal oxygen stability+strong interface compatibility+precision machining, achieving flame retardant and heat-resistant synergy, meeting the long-term high-temperature service needs of the global high-end market.
